Age Assurance on Discord: Vendors, Methods, and Your Data

To help Discord users have an experience appropriate for their age, we have implemented additional protections on teen accounts while maintaining the full Discord experience for adult users. Our systems are built to only prompt age assurance when it's needed to access content flagged by our sensitive content filters, age-restricted spaces, or to change certain settings, so the majority of Discord users will not be asked to confirm their age. But if you are asked or you choose to confirm your age, we want you to know who's handling your information and what happens to it.

This page explains who we work with to confirm your age, what methods are available, what data each method involves, and what data Discord receives and stores.

Our principles

Before any vendor can process Discord user data, they have to meet a consistent set of standards. These principles apply regardless of which method or vendor is involved:

Age signal, not identity - We don’t want to know who you are, we just need to know enough to place you in the proper age group. Regardless of the age assurance method used, Discord does not receive your biometric data, ID documents, or other identifying information about you. Any data provided as part of confirming your age is only accessed by our vendor and is deleted after the age check is complete. Discord only receives an age signal (such as estimated age or age group) and limited related data such as the method of assurance used.
Data minimization - Vendors are required to only collect the minimum information needed to confirm age and nothing more. All data must be permanently deleted after the age check is complete.
Limited use - Our vendors can't use information you submit for any purposes other than supporting the age check process. They can't use it for ads targeting, to build profiles, or to improve their services or train models. Discord similarly limits the use of age signals to providing the right protections and experience for you based on age.
On-device processing by default - Whenever technically possible, personal information is processed directly on your device instead of being sent to Discord or our vendors. For example, facial age estimation analyzes your selfie on your device, so the image doesn’t need to be sent elsewhere to estimate your age group. You can refer to the tables below to see how data is processed for each method.
Choice - We are committed to offering you more than one method whenever possible, so you can choose the method you're most comfortable with.

How we hold vendors accountable

Discord works with age assurance vendors who handle age checks on our behalf. We vet vendors through privacy and security reviews before they're allowed to process any data. Vendors also commit to handling data in specific and limited ways under contractual terms that we set. That means the principles above aren't just good intentions. They are binding requirements written into our agreements with each vendor, and they apply to any third-party age assurance partners a vendor uses as well.

Our Privacy Policy and our agreements with vendors set the rules for what they are allowed to do with your information. A vendor's own privacy policy may cover a lot more than what they do for us; it can include other products, services, or business purposes that have nothing to do with our age assurance process.

What Discord receives and what it doesn’t

Discord only ever receives your age signal. Not your name, not your ID, not your face scan. We work with vendors that handle the age checks on their end. Once the age check is complete, the underlying data is deleted, and Discord gets an age signal to place you into your age group (teen or adult). Your age group isn't shown on your profile or visible to other members in a server, and your identity is not associated with your Discord account.

Age assurance vendors we work with

k-ID

Overview: We partner with k-ID to support several methods, including credit card check, facial age estimation, ID document scan + selfie, and AgeKeys. k-ID acts as an orchestrator that works with specialized third-party age assurance partners.

Certifications: k-ID holds several industry-recognized accreditations, including ACCS 3:2021 Technical Requirements for Age Appropriate Design certification in the UK, ISO 27566-1 (Age Assurance systems), ISO/IEC 27001:2022 (Information Security), ISO/IEC 27701:2019 (Privacy Management), and SOC 2 Type II certification.

Credit card check	A small temporary charge (less than $0.50 USD) may be placed on your credit card to confirm that it's valid. If charged, the amount is refunded within 14 business days.	Your credit card details are sent through a secure k-ID portal to Stripe. Stripe runs the credit card and returns whether the process was successful.	Once the age check is complete, Stripe retains the last four digits of your credit card and a financial record (amount, status, timestamps), consistent with its legal obligations as a payment processor (e.g. financial regulations and tax laws). Discord receives only confirmation that you are an adult or if the result was inconclusive.
Facial Age Estimation	You take a brief video selfie. Processing happens entirely on your device, which means your video selfie is never sent to anyone.	The solution runs entirely on your device to analyze your selfie and outputs only an estimated age.	The selfie is deleted from your device immediately after processing. Only your estimated age is passed to Discord.
ID document scan + selfie*	You take a photograph of a government-issued ID and take a selfie to confirm the ID belongs to you.	The image of your ID is sent through a secure portal to Veratad, one of k-ID's trusted third-party providers. Veratad confirms the document's authenticity and extracts your age. Your selfie is compared to the photo shown on the ID to confirm it belongs to you.	Your selfie and extracted ID document data are deleted once verification is complete. Discord receives only your age.
AgeKey	A reusable credential you can create after completing an age assurance process on Discord, through other companies who support AgeKey, or independently at AgeKey.org. Your AgeKey is then stored on your device.	The AgeKey lives as a passkey on your device. AgeKeys are double-blind, which means that neither Discord nor k-ID knows the website or service you visited to create your AgeKey, nor can they see where a given AgeKey is used.	You can delete your AgeKey any time via your device's passkey manager. Discord receives only whether your AgeKey successfully proves you are an adult (pass/fail).

*In limited scenarios (for example if other confirmation methods have been exhausted) you may be eligible for a manual review with a k-ID representative, who can review your ID and selfie in order to confirm your age group. This isn't an option you can select directly. If your account is eligible, the manual review will be offered via an official Discord DM, or as an option via Active Violations > the Minimum Age Requirements violation card if you are appealing a ban for not meeting the minimum required age to use Discord.

Additional methods

We offer some additional ways to confirm your age which don't involve an age assurance vendor, and instead rely on services you already use and control.

Managing your age group data

We offer a range of age assurance methods because we understand different users will have different preferences. If your account is initially placed in the wrong age group, you may be able to retry the same method or try a different one. As noted above, in limited scenarios (for example if other confirmation methods have been exhausted) you may be eligible for a manual review with a k-ID representative.

Data our vendors hold: Because all verification data processed by our age assurance vendors as part of the age assurance process is deleted once the check is complete, vendors do not retain any of your identifying information.
